3 Things We Learnt From Liverpool 2-0 Atletico Madrid

 1) Kostas Tsimikas's 1st real test

It was a big call from Jurgen Klopp to give Tsimikas the nod ahead of Roberson, against Atletico Madrid. Though he has already started 5 games this season, this was certainly a step-up considering the quality of the opposition. However, he repaid the faith shown in him with flying colors. He delivered some exceptional crosses throughout the game. Jota who scored Liverpool's 1st  of the night, could've easily had a hat-trick if he converted from Tsimikas's delivery. In the 42nd minute, Tsimikas whipped the ball into the box which Jota headed straight at Oblak who made the save to keep him out. In 54th minute, Tsimikas outmuscled Carrasco and delivered a beautiful cross from the byline but Jota failed to covert once again as the ball came of his shoulder. Although Atletico were down to 10 men for the majority of the game, this was a very complete performance from our 'Greek Scouser.'

2) Diogo Jota, our No.9

We're no stranger to the fact that Jota has a knack of appearing in some really good goal scoring positions. Also, though not the tallest, he loves a header or two. He opened Liverpool' scoring after heading Trent's inch perfect cross into the back of the net in the 13ht minute. However, he must improve on his finishing. Tonight, he could've easily had a hat-trick if not for his poor finishing and for some selfish play from Salah. Tsimikas whipped in some delicious crosses but he failed to guide them into the back of net. I know it's a big ask to convert each and every chance he gets but there are going to be games where Liverpool won't create as much and the odd chance they create, must be converted.

3) Fabinho's importance can't be overstated

After Liverpool's midfield almost disappearing against Brighton, parity was restored against Atletico as Fabinho came back into the side. His presence meant that Liverpool succumbed to far less counter-attacks and it also allowed Henderson to play in his usual No.8 role on the right. It was also a very bright performance from Alex Oxlade Chamberlain after he was given the nod from the start. Whenever Fab plays, things usually turn out alright irrespective of combination of the other 2 midfielders playing alongside him. Alisson, Trent, Virgil Van Dijk and the Front 3 are usually the ones who steal the headline but Fabinho's importance to this team can't be overlooked. Liverpool, having scored twice in the 1st half and Atleti being down to 10 men, allowed Jurgen Klopp to bring back Fabinho at the hour mark by also giving minutes to Thiago who himself was coming on after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Overall, it was an almost perfect night for the Reds (except for Bobby's injury) as they confirmed top spot in the so called 'Group of Death.'
