3 Things We Learnt From Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool
1) Mane and Salah bounce back
Mane opened the scoring for the Reds as he capitalised on a mistake from Chalobah who slipped and gave the ball straight to him. It was a welcome return on the scoresheet for Mane who ended a 9-game drought. Salah scored Liverpool's 2nd as he beat Mendy at the near post. It was a confidence booster for him as well after he missed a vital penalty at Leicester. However, it was their last game before the AFCON and Liverpool would have to do without them for the next 5 games or so.
2) Liverpool's midfield was 2nd best
Liverpool's midfield was completely dominated by Chelsea. It was surprising to see James Milner start the game at Stamford Bridge but he did well in the opening stages of the game. However, he gave away a silly foul which eventually led to Chelsea's opener. Henderson, once again, failed to track back his runner as Pulisic ran past him and equalised for Chelsea. Fabinho did his bit defensively but was bypassed by Kante far too often. Given Thiago's poor injury record and the uncertain futures of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita, midfield becomes a key priority for Liverpool in the summer.
3) Kelleher stands tall
Caoimhin Kelleher came in for Alisson who was ruled out with Covid. It was his biggest test till now and he produced a Man of the Match display. Though he conceded twice, he produced some vital saves to deny Chelsea. In the early stages of the game, he made an excellent 1v1 save against Pulisic. He also saved the free kick from Alonso but unfortunately, Kovacic's strike was just too good to save. In the 2nd half, he once again denied Pulisic from close range as he prevented Chelsea from taking the lead. Overall, it was a magnificent performance from Liverpool's No. 2 and one he should be proud of.
