3 Things We Learnt From Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool
1) Gomez was excellent at RB
Jurgen Klopp gave Alexander Arnold a timely rest and brought in Joe Gomez at RB. It was a good move on paper considering the fixture list and the fact that Trent would've come against one of the trickest wingers in the PL in Saint-Maximin. Klopp's rotation paid off as Gomez was excellent throughout the game. He did well to deal with Saint-Maximin all game and was full of running, linking up with the attack whenever possible. He was unlucky not to end the game with an assist as Mane missed a big chance to score from his low cross.
2) Keita and Milner shine
Klopp also made a big call in his midfield selection as he rested both Fabinho and Thiago and brought in Keita and Milner. Both were emphatic as both of them played a role in the only goal Liverpool scored. Milner won the ball back with a fair challenge on Schar and the ball was passed on to the right hand side where Keita and Jota played a little one-two between them as Keita came inside, sat a few Newcastle players down and finished off the move in style. Milner, despite hardly featuring for the Reds, didn't look out of place and Keita was calmness personified not only in his goal but also with his overall game as he controlled the tempo of the game.
3) How did the game end 0-1?
Liverpool had some big chances throughout the game. Van Dijk, Robertson, Jota, Mane, Diaz and Salah, all had some half decent chances to score but none of them failed to get on the score sheet. This kept Newcastle in the game and it was big opportunity for them to nick something late on. Liverpool, however, had other plans. Matip and Van Dijk were imperious and looked in total control. Robertson was excellent as well as he made an important tackle right at the end of the game. It was a huge win for Liverpool as they beat one of the most in-form sides in the PL at this moment in time.
