3 Things We Learnt From Liverpool 4-0 Southampton

1) Robertson has his say

There was a lot of talk pre-match about Liverpool's 1st choice left-back spot. Robbo has had an up and down season until now whereas Tsimikas has excelled whenever given the opportunity. Despite this, Klopp insisted at his pre-match press conference that Robbo was the undisputed 1st choice and it's doubtful if anyone would argue after today's display. In 2nd minute, Mane passed the ball to Robertson who delivered an inch perfect cross for Jota to score. In the 11th minute, he delivered another accurate ball for Mane who scored but the goal was choked off for offside. Again, in the 72nd minute, he whipped in a delightful cross for Jota who scuffed his chance and failed to grab his hattrick. All in all, it was an almost perfect performance from Liverpool's left back and he was unlucky not to have more than 1 assist to his name by the end of the game.

2) Alisson needs to be appreciated more

Chelsea currently have the best defensive record in the league, having conceded just 4 goals. A lot of praise has been showered over Edouard Mendy and quite rightly so. However, it's almost shocking how little coverage Alisson gets for his efforts. It's crazy how many times he bails Liverpool out from difficult situations. Not only does he have great distribution but he's also incredible 1v1. Liverpool's dominance on the ball means that he doesn't have a lot to do in most games but he is expected to step up when required and luckily for us, he does 9/10 times. This, for me, is his most special quality. Today, in the first half, Broja made a great run into the box, holding off Konate, to shoot but it was Ali's great effort that denied him. Not only that but right at the end of the 1st half, it was again he who denied Armstrong's effort to preserve Liverpool's clean sheet.

3) Liverpool's 1st choice midfield on show

Despite Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's upturn in form, Klopp decided to give him a rest and started with the midfield trio of Fabinho, Thiago and Henderson. It was after a long time that fans got to see all three midfielders in action at the same time. It was a very commanding display from Liverpool's midfield trio as they contributed massively in both departments. Fabinho was at his usual best, pinching balls and stopping Southampton from counter attacking. Henderson set the tempo of the game and combined extensively with Mo Salah on the right hand channel. It is great to him getting back to full fitness and let's hope that he can stay fit for the remainder of the season. Finally, Thiago who was an absolute joy to watch. He did give away a few loose balls in the 1st half but more than made up for it by scoring an absolute banger in the 37th minute.
